Brenda Williams

Dr. Brenda Williams and her husband, Dr. Joseph Williams, have run the Excelsior Medical Clinic in Sumter, South Carolina for nearly thirty years, caring for their rural patients “mind, body, and soul.” Over the years Brenda has assisted thousands of citizens in and around Sumter to register to vote and get to the polls on Election Day.

In the face of newly enacted voter ID requirements, many long-time South Carolina voters were disenfranchised. Brenda has assisted these voters—often older citizens who were born at home, without a formal birth certificate—through the process of obtaining a DMV-issued ID. Dr. Williams simply does not take “no” for an answer.

On Election Day she is in her element, bringing ballots to homebound voters and transporting others to the polls, sharing words of encouragement and uplifting gospel music wherever she goes. Her commitment to making sure every citizen’s vote is counted connects us with the long struggle for voting rights, and the tireless sacrifices of so many.
